I'm talking Bonds post Pittsburgh, when he became a free agent and went to the Giants. Said he preferred SF.
I had no idea about Smoltz, any idea when in his career it happened? I liked him most of the big 3, I like him as a broadcaster too.
Good call about Clemens, I remember the GM of the Red Sox saying he was in the "twilight of his career" when they let him walk. Then he went on to fucking dominate, albeit with a little help from his "vitamins"
Re Smolz
It was each time he was a free agent. He didn't want to come to New York.

Smoltz was a FA after 1996 and after 2001 and both times George made a play for him and both times he went back to Atlanta.

Even when he was done and went to the Red Sox, the Yankees made him an offer

Great post. I love the reminiscing or learning about stuff from years ago.
If someone didn’t want to come, for whatever reason, so be it. But that’s why Goerge was so great. He did what he had to do or wanted to do.

Some we couldn't get to resign:

Gossage in 1984
Jackson in 1982
Clemens /Pettite in 2004
Cano 2013
Both Gossage and Jackson admitted later it was a mistake to leave.

Clemens actually was a POS about this because he said he was retiring. If the Yankees knew he really intended on playing they would have offered him a qualifying offer and then gotten a draft picks for him when he signed with the Astros "coming out of retirement".

Pettite , they knew his elbow was going to blow and they were right. So they didn't go hard after him.

Cano might fit @lightweight criteria. They wanted him back but Seattle blew them away with a ridiculous offer.

One guy I forgot about was Dave Righetti. They wanted him back but the Giants gave him a better offer and he wanted to live in SF because either he or his wife was from there

Sasaki, Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, quite the coup for the Dodgers this week. Long season, lots of injuries, but they might make a run at the record for most wins in a season. They should steam roll everyone.

And a thumbs down to the Mets and Yankees for not making the additional moves they need to make to save a few bucks. Neither team on paper currently could beat Dodgers in a playoff formatted series.

Pitchers and catchers in 3 weeks

And how does Ichiro NOT get in HOF unanimously ? Can someone explain to me how 1 person felt he wasn't deserving, I bet its the same asshole who left Jeter 1 vote shy of unanimously getting in. Some of these voters hiding are pussies. Don't have to explain a rhyme or reason, no rational baseball fan could argue both didn't deserve it.

That lineup is very weak past the first few hitters.
Given how spotty the rotation is they are about the third best team in their division right now and the fifth in the league.
It funny how the Yankees and Mets are similar. Decent lineups with several question marks as to who will have a bounce back year or not. Neither has a great rotation or bullpen. Mets maybe slightly better defensively.

Alonso is a nice piece to have back for the Mets, desperately needed to lengthen that lineup.

@MonkeyBiz3 - Yankees rotation isn't great? What are you talking about? Its top 3 in the AL and top 5-6 in baseball. Yankees bullpen is nails if 'Lo comes back healthy. Mets rotation and pen is good at best. Yankees bullpen not great, lmao.

Yes, they are very weak, you sure know the Mets well. Your post sounds like a Michael Kay rant. And he is a doich and Mets hater. He is an embarrassment
Lol, I can't stand Michael Kay either. He is a pompous asshole and really a phony because he says one thing on his show but another on the broadcast.

But that said, don't you agree the Mets could use another bat?
Lindor and Soto are superstar level, Alonzo is a solid 40 homer, 100 RBI guy but after that?
Convince me I'm wrong

Of coarse I would like another bat. But this lineup is pretty good. If Vientos continues , and Nimo is healthy and Alverez starts producing at a high level which he should, then I rather have another high end starter.
Another bat? Sure , that would be great but if you are proven right, they can get a bat at the deadline.
But Billy, in a perfect world, yea, another really good bat and a front line pitcher, would be great.
Maybe Mauricio turns into that bat you mentioned.

All the Mets fans I know think they need a DH.
Vientos looks like a stud, it all depends how the league adjusts to him.
Siri and Marte are question marks for me.
Marte can hit but he has been having trouble staying healthy and Siri is a all or nothing guy.
He will frustrate you. Plus he is a dick. He is the type of guy who will hit a home run when you're down 8-0 in the ninth inning and trot around the bases like he just won the World Series, pointing in the opposite dugout and stuff like that. He will get the Mets into a lot of unnecessary fights.
He's got a lot of talent but teams have been dumping him.
