My point is, if you want to sound like someone who knows what she's talking about, that 57th St. is
uptown compared to the Village and the Financial District.
In New York, "downtown" doesn't refer to the Central Business District, as it does in most other cities (probably because New York actually has two unconnected CBDs). Instead, it's used geographically. Downtown means south (generally, south of 14th St.).
It actually has some meaning, too. Because "downtown" also takes on some cultural connotations ("downtown" being bohemian, "uptown" being straight). In that sense, 57th St. is about the least "downtown" street you could think of.
None of this is that important. But, as I said, it'll help if you want to sound like you know what you're talking about.
